albanchez village

ALBANCHEZ

As you drive through the lemon and almond groves, you will stumble across the very traditional Andalucian village of Albanchez (pronounced Albancheth) Almeria, Spain.

Traffic is a rare sound above the bird song. Rest and relaxation is the order of the day. You can wander the streets and feel like you are the only person living here.

The village has all the amenities you need to enjoy your stay.........A couple of bars and a restaurant! Plus all the shops you need for a self catering stay, there's even a local swimming pool.

All are within walking distance from the house.

Albanchez street

Albanchez street

Explore Costa de Almeria and Granada. Go walking, or bird watching. The landscape and streets will keep any artist occupied! Want to escape the tourists, but still be fairly close to a beach.

Nestled in the Sierra de los Filabres yet only approximately 40 minutes from the beach, Albanchez is the prefect base. Few of the villagers speak English, but all will make you welcome. If you're willing to really try Spain, then look no further than Albanchez.

A SELECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS FROM AROUND THE VILLAGE OF ALBANCHEZ

VILLAGE AMENITIES
With a population of only 600 - 700 people, Albanchez is not a particularly large village, and yet it is fully self contained. After arriving, you have no need to drive anywhere if you don't want to. As you can see, the streets are sometimes steep and narrow - definitely designed for donkeys, or walking rather than for cars.

SHOPS:
Butchers, Grocery, Bakers, Tobacconist, General Stores, Hairdressers, Restaurant (see below), Couple of Bars, petrol station. There's even a Todo shop (sells just about everything). As is traditional of an Andalucian village.......people have turned the front room of their home into a shop, and often they are not sign posted! You need to be brave and stick your head round the door to see what you can discover. (However for those of you who are less adventurous, we have photographed the shops and supplied written directions. You will find a useful information folder on the bookshelf in the living room).

The Amanacer restaurant

The Amanecer restaurant is just a 5 - 10 minute stroll through the village. The 3 course menu of the day at lunch time (2-3pm) is excellent value for money, and tapas in the evening is not to be missed - their calamari are the best we've ever tasted. (served from approx 9pm onwards).

The bar is open all day long, and you will always find a warm welcome here. Antonio (who speaks very good English) and his mum and dad are wonderful hosts. A visit is strongly recommended. (good wholesome Spanish cuisine).

Albanchez market

MARKETS:
There is a small market on Thursdays in Albanchez, mainly selling fruit and vegetables.

Albox (the nearest town to Albanchez - approx. 20 minutes by car) has a much larger market on Tuesdays. Definitely worth a visit. Get there early to find a parking space, and just walk towards the river bed. You will find the market spread through the side streets. Stalls sell items such as clothing, shoes, bedding, household utensils, food etc.

OTHER SERVICES:
Post Office, Banks, Civil Guard (local police), Public Swimming Pool (open July/August) There is also a School, a Mechanic and a Carpenter in the village. Near the swimming pool is a public basket ball play area.

MEDICAL:
There are two doctors in the village, and there is 24 hour medical emergency cover. On the outer edge of the village, there is even an emergency helicopter landing pad available, should anyone need to be flown to hospital.

Public swimming pool in Albanchez

Albanchez's public swimming pool is open during July and August.

There are two daily swim sessions. (morning and late afternoon)

Entry tokens are purchased from the local bank.
